I have had decent to good luck with filler primer that comes in a can, to each their own, but it depends on the quality of how you would like your truck, I would rattle can part of it and if it don't look as good as you like, then sand it off, but i would def. scuff it with something at least before you put anything to it.
If you find I stand and stare at your explaination of things and I look dazed and confused, It's okay, I'm probably stoned...........

When i did mine I sanded everything with a DA; I believe I started with 80 then went to 120 then 180 and shot 2 coats of high build primer on it then sanded it again by hand until it was as smooth as I wanted and shot some more primer then paint and clear.

when i painted brendas interior pieces i used dawn soap and hot water to clean them really good. i then used duplicolor high build primer (2-3 coats) and then i used dupicolor victory red paint (2--3 coats) then i used the clear coat and did about 3-4 coats of that. here are some pictures. we painted them july of 07 i believe and they are holding up good. the majority of parts we painted dont see alot of hand traffic so they are holding up better then say a door hand/arm rest area.
